Hmmm...

May 15, 2008 11:09am

Isn't it funny how some people say mate when they mean girl/boyfriend?

I mean, over here in England, we have plenty of mates, matey boy. What d'you reckon mate?

"So, you got a mate?"
"Yes, I've got lots of mates."
"Woah, how?"
"I make new mates all the time, matey boy."
"What, am I your mate now!?"
"I suppose."
"Are you some kind of furry pimp?"

Anyway, it's a very boring day. At least the sun's had the kindness to go away.
Rhyming is kinda gay.

    Can I get some howls
    for my mate Matthew Fowles?

    Oh wait...
    don't say the word mate
    that's something he hates
    simply won't tolerate

    Not much else to say
except he thinks rhyming is gay
    which made me go "Hey!"
so I wrote this message this way.

(I feel dirty after sinking my standards to that...)

I was going to write about something similar. I find it most perculiar. I've only ever encountered furries (of various levels of obsession) using it.

You know... I never thought about how that must look to a lot of people outside the US. I use the term 'mate' with my boyfriend all the time without second thought because we don't use to to express friendship. I've heard people use crony more that mate to describe close ones and crony is an odd little word, yes?
