"Why do you wear a collar?"

I've never been one of those furs that constantly panics about how to tell their parents/friends they are a furry, or what they would do if their parents/friends found out. To me, it's always just been a personal hobby that I don't feel the need to share with anyone who probably wouldn't either care or understand. Not that I'm ashamed of it or try to hide it; I'll happily parade around the house in tail/ears when I feel like it (though not generally outside the house unless I'm with other furs), and my collar almost never leaves my neck.

Granted, it helps that I've been such an eccentric kid all my life that my parents would hardly blink an eye if I suddenly showed up in a fursuit. It also helps that I don't even live with my parents 80% of the year.

But recently my dad has been pestering me a bit about why I wear a collar. I usually joke at him and say, "because I'm a kitty!" Which usually makes him laugh and ignore the question, but lately he's been persisting anyways, despite the joke.

Which made me wonder, am I actually avoiding telling him?
In most of the situations he's asked, there's been other people around, we've been in the middle of another activity, and I tell myself that I just don't feel like explaining the whole thing to him at that time. Maybe that's true, maybe I'm kidding myself.

It's not like I don't know what to say to him. I've had that spiel in my head since the day I bought the collar and planned on what to say should someone (who's opinion actually mattered) ask.

Ah well. I don't feel like I have anything to hide, but maybe I'm just so used to my parents not knowing (and not caring) about my hobbies that this is throwing me for a bit of a loop.

In other semi-related news, I do need a new collar. The pawprints have worn off this one and it's starting to itch me for some reason. It's not really in the budget right now though... maybe I'll find a way to make one.
