Furries: Politically, Socially, Retardedly... whatever. (Warning, RANT!)

Anyway, I have seen more and more talk lately of the Furry Fandom (God, I hate that term!) receiving only bad publicity. Well, yeah. We ARE in fact a bunch of weirdos... Anyway, what's with everyone trying to produce shit that will give us "good" publicity?
Does our community as a whole suffer from such an inadequacy problem that we feel we have to PROVE ourselves to the general public? And, honestly, what the hell do you think they're gonna say? If somehow a SANE furry managed to get word out onto cable television that "Hey, I know we seem like a bunch of freaks, and some of us probably are, but honestly we're just a bunch of nice people who love animals a lot! Seriously, don't hate, yo!" ... Do you honestly think that the general public is going to say, "Wow, hey, this odd community is so much more normal than every other odd community that we STILL STEREOTYPE AGAINST regardless of all the good publicity that they've gotten, we're gonna agree with them and forget all those bad and weird ideas we had about them, just because they think we should!"

Honestly, think about it. We are a bunch of basement/apartment dwelling hippies/goths/ravers/fatties/nerds-- MISFITS that spend way too much time with either a sketchbook or a computer in front of them. Considering that, take into account that we all have some odd affinity for animals. Most people (or "HYOOMANS") if you prefer, don't find that quite normal. They don't like thinking that there are people who might want to molest their family pets.

So, again, with that in mind, they generally don't CARE enough to really look into our fandom much further than what you see randomly on MTV or whichever other basic cable channel they happen to be brainmelting into at that particular time.
So seriously, stop it with the crying for attention. Come to grips that we're not quite as easy to accept as most other weird social groups, like gays and feminists. We're just not, and until the general public starts actually GIVING A SHIT, nothing we do is going to change them.
