R.I.P. Akasha

There’s so much to say about my best friend. She was such a good companion. She was my first rat and I never knew what good friends they can make. I’ve only known her for 2 short years, but it seems like I’ve known her forever. Right now I have 6 rats and none of them mean as much to me as Akasha does. She was so close to me. She was my best friend. I know I will never be able to replace her.

I can remember the first time I saw her and tried to pick her out of the cage at the pet store. It was my mate, Leo that tried to get her out and she kept jumping back and forth on his shoulders. It was also Leo who named her. Akasha, the vampire queen from “Queen of the Damned” At first she didn’t like to be held. She would squeak a lot, but she eventually warmed up to me. I remember keeping her hiding from my parents for 2 weeks cuz I didn’t know how they would react to her. I eventually showed them. My dad didn’t care too much, but my mom liked her. My sister liked her a lot too. She always wanted to play with her. It’s funny how my 8 year old sister loved her when most adult women don’t like rats. I know now when my sister grows up she’ll have rats of her own.

We went through some really tough times around last Christmas when I discovered her first tumor. It’s been going downhill ever since. Once I got her a playmate, Mocha, she was starting to feel miserable. Rats know when there’s a problem with another rat, and Mocha from the very beginning would pick on Akasha. That’s why I left her in a separate cage. I thought after her first tumor was gone she’d get lucky, but a second one appeared, and now she has 3 more. The vet even told me she had some troubles with the second one. She was breathing weird and they had to add some extra drugs to keep her down. Everyone at the vet loved her. I think it was because I was the first person to ever come in with a rat.

I can’t even count the memories I’ve had with her…… laying on my bed together….. Just hanging around. She loved to sit on my shoulder…… I know I will love her and miss her forever, but I know she will always be with me…….. Our spirits are intertwined….. I will see her in the clouds and the stars… I will feel her in the leaves and the blades of grass…… when the wind blows, I know it’s her embrace……. Sleep well, my love.
